In this study, changes in concentration of NOD and other NRPs during cyanophage infection of the filamentous cyanobacteria Nodularia spumigena were assessed using incubation experiments. Viral infection and lysis were associated with a significant reduction (93% at the 96 h post infection) of N. spumigena cell density.

N. spumigena produces the hepatotoxin, nodularin (Rinehart et al., 1988), and has been reported to affect aquatic and terrestrial animals (Landsberg, 2002). A. flos-aquae and Anabaena spp. are generally not toxic in the Baltic Sea (Sivonen et al., 1989). In freshwater environments, in contrast, both genera produce toxins (Landsberg, 2002). Effects of NODLN on FlounderThe administration of NODLN by force-feeding into flounder, either as a single high dose 4 days before sampling or as three smaller doses 3 days apart, clearly caused some hepatocellular damage. We investigated the effects of addition of dissolved organic matter (DOM) on the growth and chemical composition of Nodularia spumigena cells under conditions of P or N deficiency.

av M Karlberg · 2017 — N. spumigena produces a toxin, nodularin, which in humans, damages the liver and can be tumour inducing in low doses (Runnegar et al.

Before the addition of the bacteria, the N. spumigena biomass, expressed as in vivo chlorophyll a fluorescence, was identical among all treatments and controls. 2002-12-03 · As far as is known, all pelagic N. spumigena populations in the Gulf of Finland are toxic (Laamanen et al., 2001). In the present study, liver bioaccumulation and the histological effects of orally administered toxic N. spumigena on sea trout were examined under laboratory conditions. Effect of salinity on growth and toxin production in cultures of the bloom-forming cyanobacterium Nodularia spumigena from Australian waters.

METHOD Sampling and test organisms This study consisted of two experiments designed to test the effects of grazing on nodularin concentrations and reciprocal effects of Nodularia spumigena on mortality and growth of the grazers. In Expt I, N. spumigena was incubated in natural, 90 m m plankton with (12–33 ind. L 2 1) or without copepods.

In the current work, the accumulation of other N. spumigena metabolites in blue mussels and crustaceans, and their effect on Thamnocephalus platyurus and Artemia franciscana, were examined. Although none of the bacterial isolates showed strong algicidal effect, the observed stimulatory and retarding effects on N. spumigena growth under culture conditions denotes the importance of the associated bacterial community for the dynamics of these cyanobacterial populations in nature. Thus far, the negative effects of Nodularia spumigena blooms on aquatic organisms have been mainly attributed to the production of the hepatotoxic nodularin (NOD). In the current work, the accumulation of other N. spumigena metabolites in blue mussels and crustaceans, and their effect on Thamnocephalus platyurus and Artemia franciscana, were examined. The variables studied here did not show any effects of NODLN.

Some strains produce a cyanotoxin called nodularin R, which is harmful to humans.
